10 Lessons From Becoming a Leader I Never Thought I’d Be

Who knew I would ever get to writing this post

Looking at a photo like the one above brings up disbelief.

Is it really me, leading a crowd through a playful yet meaningful experience — and having fun along the way?

For most of my life, I would never dare to do this.

I’m so astonished about where I’m at that… I allowed myself to write a “10 lessons” listicle…😱 I know!

Let me share a few words of context first and pray for forgiveness.

I always had an inclination to host. As a 4-year old in kindergarten, I loved being “on duty” at the end of the day. When parents were coming to pick up their kids, the one “on duty” was responsible for greeting parents at the door — and running to tell their child they could now go home.

I loved doing that. It made me feel “in charge.” It made me feel useful. It made me feel like I had a role and hence — that I belonged.

As an adult, it took me a while to create a context for myself where I could fulfil that same desire. Through facilitating Authentic Relating events and leading the community at The Salisbury Centre, I eventually did.
