Hi, my name is… [or: My Manifesto]

Hi, my name is Marta. The face you see on the picture above is mine. I chose this very photograph on purpose, so you can see me at my best: in the middle of sailing holidays, with a sunburnt face and messy hair. Please note the bathing suit lurking from underneath my shirt. This is the ultimate sign that I feel as free and joyful as it gets.

I feel that I would like to introduce myself properly, as it seems that I will stick around here for a while, writing on Medium. For the past couple of months I have been getting increasingly clearer about the message I want to be passing on. This message is about me and about you at the same time.

It is about making myself enjoy the work I do, and at the same time giving out the best I have to others.

I don’t believe that it is either me OR you. I believe that the greatest benefit comes from finding the balance between caring about myself and sharing my best qualities with the people who are interested in the topics I write about.

I write about well-being, in the broadest possible sense of the word. Obviously, everyone on this planet wants to be well. For some of us it means having more money or food to eat. For others it means dealing with depression, anxiety, break-up or one of the thousand and one potential issues that might be in our way to lasting joy.

I don’t know how to save the world yet — therefore I am focusing on the aspects of individual experience that each of us is capable of attending to. This means our own consciousness, emotional life, health and mental processes. I believe that there is a lot we can do to take care of ourselves in those areas of life.

To me, personal growth doesn’t have to come from pushing my limits, scheduling productive habits and measuring progress towards my goals. I see those as additions which naturally manifest in a life full of caring. Caring for ourselves and all life around us — caring for the whole, which consists of countless interconnected elements.

Among those elements, there is you and me.

I am not enlightened and I am not a personal coach. I am Marta, who is genuinely interested in the topic of self-realization, and who wants to keep digging into it. I have my little wins and fails every day. I experience moments of clarity and unbelievable connectedness, followed by states of distraction and purposelessness. And because it feels so intruiging to observe the fluidity of life, the varying emotional states, the absurdity and complexity of my thoughts — I want to be sharing this.

This is why I write.

I base my stories on my own experience and on discussions with others. I also look into what other people said or wrote on the topic, and sometimes I even include scientific research to back up my ideas. But my intention is not to point you to any ultimate truth.

It is up to you what you take from my articles. I would love for them to be an inspiration, but sometimes they might just serve you as a confirmation that things are not in a certain way. Whatever you get from reading me, I hope it can be of value on your journey.

Let’s be patient and gentle with ourselves, while striving to become better people. Let’s learn how to enjoy the process and the present moment — no matter what. Let’s appreciate how good it feels to be alive.
