How to Come Back to Writing After a Long Break

A 30-day challenge to rebuild writing confidence

My comeback to writing proved more difficult than I thought. I didn’t account for the fact that, during the period I wasn’t writing (September 2021 — May 2023, almost two years!), my life changed a lot.

Those changes made it impossible to go back to “business as usual.” Until 2021, writing had been my main thing. It was my full time job and pretty much all I did work-wise, five days a week, for 5+ hours.

Coming back, I need to tailor my writing routine to a very different setup.

My “come back to writing” has been underway for the past year. I still don’t feel like I’m fully back. Part of it is because, these days, there are many more things competing for my attention. Living in a community centre, running events, and client work take up a lot of space.

It’s much harder to carve out uninterrupted time for typing words.

And yet, this is what I want to do. As much as it feels hard right now, writing gives me rewards I can’t find anywhere else. It allows me to have clarity in my thinking. It helps me to understand what I know, and pinpoint what I need to learn.
