My Newly Discovered Secret to Impactful Workshop Facilitation
It has nothing to do with a perfect plan. Actually, it’s kind of the opposite.
The best workshops I facilitated happened when I felt slightly underprepared. It sounds counterintuitive — but it’s true.
My problem is that I often overdo it. I think through A, B, C, and D scenarios. I try to think of each possible response the group might have at different stages of the event.
As much as it sounds helpful — for me, it isn’t.
When I overthink my facilitation, I get lost in the complex plan. I create an illusion of control and trick myself into thinking I have all the answers. This often means I lose touch with the present moment and actual needs of the group.
Conversely, when I’m a bit underprepared, it forces me to tune in to the space and be more responsive. I’ve felt for a while now that this benefits the group. But recently, I’ve pinpointed what is it exactly that makes a difference.
The Way Beginner Facilitators Think They Make an Impact
I consider myself just coming out of the beginner stage as a facilitator.
